Course overview

Learner Objectives: The Northeast Chapter of the UHMS continuing education mission is to promote educational activities for physicians and allied health professionals in the local and regional areas. These activities are based on a needs assessment of the members and on the recommendations of the UHMS Panel of Expert Opinion. These activities will improve the scientific and practical knowledge in the areas of hyperbaric oxygen treatment and diving medicine. Promoting Safety: AGE (Philip Castrovinci, MD) US Navy diving is a unique program in the underwater world. It has a long and proud history with foundational biomedical discoveries first described by the Navy Medical Corps. Safety is paramount. The Navy has multiple research and reporting programs working on all aspects of diving from basic bench research to epidemiology of injury. A discussion of a 10 year period of Arterial Gas Embolism data from the Navy Safety Center is presented followed by a discussion of trends and shortcomings. Utilization of DAN resources (Camilo Saraiva, MD) Will provide a summarized description of DAN Medical Services and its utilization. Medicine and Diving (Tony Alleman, MD) This lecture will discuss medications and the potential effects in the diving and/or hyperbaric environment. The mechanism of the effect of these medications will be discussed. Considerations will include oxygen toxicity, central nervous system effects, cardiac effects, hydration, glucose metabolism, decompression sickness, and the type of diving. Scientific Diving at Aquariums and Universities (Joe Gessert DSO for the NY Aquarium) This lecture will cover a brief history of scientific diving standards in the US, the structure of university and aquarium scientific diving programs, and the importance of medical clearance for staff, student, and volunteer divers.
