MEDICAL ERROR PREVENTION AND PATIENT SAFETY (3 CE)

Course overview

This course explores the important issue of medical errors and patient safety. The key principles of root cause analysis are discussed. Next, the steps taken by hospitals and other health care facilities to reduce and prevent medical errors are identified, in addition to the most common sources of medical errors. The RE-AIM framework is outlined which is used as an approach to translate patient safety research to clinical practice. Furthermore, this course addresses misdiagnoses, misuse of medications, and psychotherapy effectiveness which can be influenced by stereotypification, language barriers, racial differences about metabolisms, and racial identity. Learning Objectives: 1. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the root cause analysis approach to evaluating the source of medical errors 2. Assess the utility of the AHRQ recommended approaches for reducing and preventing medical errors 3. Delineate the most common sources of medical errors 4. Evaluate each stage in the RE-AIM framework for translating patient safety research into clinical practice 5. Assess the impact of racial and ethnic differences on diagnosis, medication use, and psychotherapy
