Think Outside the Box: A Grassroots Approach to the Histology Shortage

There is a workforce shortage of people entering the profession of histology and the specialized professions associated with it. Hospitals and doctor practices are having a difficult time finding and retaining qualified and skilled histology technicians, technologist, supervisors and managers. Recruiting qualified professional staff is an arduous task. A more difficult task is finding people interested in the histology profession. I decided to take a grassroots approach and go to local high schools and speak to both the students and teachers about what a rewarding profession- histotechnology is. In this presentation we will discuss how to go about doing this within your local community and how to generate interest from high schoolers. I will also give examples of how to approach community colleges that offer a STEM curriculum and let educators know what histology is and the technical component are. Camille has visited numerous high schools, vocational schools and has also visited a local pre-med high school club. Camille will share her experience and offer suggestions.
