Establishing a digital pathology system within your practice will likely feel overwhelming and fraught with challenges relating to infrastructure, standardization, workflows, and governance. A phased approach ensures stakeholders focus on the foundations of success and incorporate lessons learned during expansion phases. At Mayo Clinic, a large, high-volume institution that spans multiple geographic sites, we implemented a three-phase approach: (1) build a solid foundation of infrastructure and workflows, (2) expand the reach of digital workflows into practice, and (3) leverage artificial intelligence platforms and applications to create an impact felt worldwide. The purpose of this lecture is to demonstrate how other institutions can prepare and implement a digital transformation to fit their practice. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to identify key elements of development for digital foundations, digital pathology practice at scale, and artificial intelligence deployment.
