Course overview

Electrocardiography (EKG) is an essential diagnostic tool used by healthcare professionals to assess the electrical activity of the heart. Nurses play a crucial role in the administration and interpretation of EKGs, making it imperative for them to have a solid understanding of this procedure. Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 17.9 million deaths in 2019 alone (World Health Organization, 2021 The prevalence of heart disease is expected to rise due to an aging population and an increase in risk factors such as obesity and diabetes (Benjamin et al., 2019). Therefore, the need for healthcare professionals who can accurately perform and interpret EKGs has never been greater. In this course, nurses will learn the basics of EKG interpretation, including how to recognize and analyze common cardiac arrhythmias and identify potential heart abnormalities.
