Course overview

Substance use disorders are prevalent in the United States. Healthcare providers may care for patients at risk for withdrawal no matter what floor of the hospital they work on. Healthcare providers need to learn the signs of withdrawal so interventions can be implemented as soon as possible. This course is designed to give a general overview of withdrawal symptoms of and treatments utilized for patients withdrawing from alcohol, opioid, stimulant and/or benzodiazepine use. Suggested audience: All direct care staff, including techs, assistants, LPNs and RNs, as well as providers. Upon completion of this presentation, you should be able to: - Identify the stages of alcohol withdrawal and symptoms in each stage. - Identify treatments for withdrawal for each category of substance discussed. - Describe physical symptoms of withdrawal for each category of substance discussed.
