Course overview

Online library of education. Inappropriate hospital readmissions and excessive lengths of stay continue to increase the burden of unnecessary utilization on health care systems. This leads to failing to provide optimal care to patients and generating moral distress among hospital providers and staff. A patient-centered approach providing continuity and utilizing principles and methods of a trauma-informed approach to care is a critical component to identify unmet or unidentified clinical needs, as is a facility with principles of clinical bioethics and an expansive notion of palliative care. This session will review concepts in ethics, trauma-informed care and palliative care. Two illustrative cases will be examined, and practical tools will be shared. Data demonstrating a reduction in length of stay and readmissions as well as the relevance of our findings to case management and clinical care will be explored.
